Solar Panels

Power generation from the sun converts sunlight into electricity through the use of photovoltaic cells and semiconductors imbedded into solar panels, which are then electrically connected together and arranged in multiples known as solar arrays.

Solar panel installations may be ground-mounted or built into the roof or walls of a building. Driven by advances in technology and increases in manufacturing scale and sophistication, the cost of solar panels has declined steadily since the first solar cells were manufactured, and the cost of electricity generated from solar panels is competitive with conventional electricity sources in an expanding list of geographic regions. Net metering from utilities and financial incentives from the federal government has lessened the cost of solar panel installations.

Off-grid solar power systems have traditionally used rechargeable batteries to store excess electricity. With grid-tied systems, excess electricity can be sent to the transmission grid, while standard grid electricity can be used to meet shortfalls. Net metering programs provide financial credits to companies that deliver excess generated electricity back into the grid.
